What are the requirements for emergency eye washes and safety showers?

Eye wash stations and safety showers must be immediately accessible to workers (See ANSI Z358.1-1998). The following summarizes some of the requirements:

Installation

Emergency units shall be in accessible locations that require no more than 10 seconds to reach.
The unit shall be located on the same level as the hazard.
The path of travel shall be free of obstructions that may inhibit immediate use of the equipment.
Where the possibility of freezing conditions exists, equipment shall be protected from freezing or freeze-protected equipment shall be installed.
Delivered flushing fluid temperature shall be tepid.
Each location shall be identified with a highly visible sign positioned so the sign shall be visible within the area served.
The area around the emergency unit shall be well-lighted.
Shut-off valves installed in the supply line for maintenance purposes, provisions shall be made to prevent unauthorized shut-off.

Maintenance and Testing

All units shall be inspected and maintained in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions.
Plumbed equipment shall be activated weekly to verify proper operation.
Employees who may be exposed to hazardous materials shall be instructed in the location and proper use of units.
When addressing washing of eyes, training shall address holding the eyelids open and rolling the eyeballs so flushing fluid will flow on all surfaces of the eye and under the eyelid.
All units shall be inspected annually to assure conformance with ANSI Z358.1 requirements.

Always check the operability of the nearest eye wash and/or safety shower prior to performing any work that has the potential for exposure to ammonia vapor or liquid.
